ICENECDEV to Host Side Events at COP16 in Cali, Colombia: Tackling Plastic Pollution for Ocean Biodiversity Preservation
Buea, Cameroon – 19th September 2024 – The International Centre for Environmental Education and Community Development (ICENECDEV) is proud to announce its participation in the 16th edition of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16), which will take place in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024. This historic event, themed “Peace with Nature”, will mark the first time Colombia hosts the biennial conference, which aims to take decisive actions to protect global biodiversity.
As part of COP16, ICENECDEV will organize two side events focusing on “Reversing and Halting the Impact of Plastic Pollution on Ocean Biodiversity”. These sessions will provide insights into community-driven approaches to combating plastic pollution along the West African coastline and across the Gulf of Guinea, emphasizing sustainable solutions for preserving marine ecosystems.
The events will take place as follows:
- October 26, 2024: Nature Positive Pavilion, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM (Colombia Local Time)
- October 31, 2024: Afternoon Session
Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to marine life, ecosystems, and human health. ICENECDEV’s sessions will draw inspiration from its experience working with local communities to tackle plastic pollution through initiatives funded by partners such as the Norwegian Retailer Environment Fund, Waste Free Oceans Belgium, Empower Norway, Surfrider Foundation, Ecotour Enterprise, SWIFT Belgium, and XminusY Netherlands.
ICENECDEV’s approach emphasizes the need for a comprehensive response, including:
- Reducing plastic production and consumption
- Improving waste management systems
- Organizing beach and coastal clean-up efforts
- Promoting agroecology and agroforestry as tools for ecosystem restoration
Attendees will learn actionable steps they can take to support these efforts, such as reducing single-use plastics, supporting legislation to curb plastic production, and participating in clean-up activities.

The 16th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP16) is part of the UNFCCC’s annual global climate negotiations, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Held in Cancun, Mexico, COP16 brought together leaders from across the world to build on previous agreements and introduce new initiatives to address the climate crisis. The conference resulted in the adoption of the Cancun Agreements, which include measures for reducing emissions, adaptation strategies, and financing mechanisms for climate action.
