Platforms: One Business Model to Rule Them All

Platforms: One Business Model to Rule Them All

The secret sauce behind the business model of some of the world’s most important companies and why this may just be the beginning.

Bill Gates once defined platforms as technologies where the economic value of everyone using them exceeds the value of the company itself. But what exactly is a platform and why is it crucial for building successful businesses and creating value in the world?

In their book “Modern Monopolies: What It Takes to Dominate the 21st Century Economy,” authors Alex Moazed and Nicholas L. Johnson shed light on the importance of platforms in today’s business landscape. They explain that companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, Uber, Airbnb, Amazon, YouTube, and Alibaba have become global powerhouses not solely due to their hardware or software, but because they have created networks that enable efficient value exchange among producers and consumers.

The key to a successful platform lies in harnessing network effects. As more people join and use the platform, it creates increasing value for all participants. Unlike traditional linear businesses, which provide value based on investment in internal resources, platforms thrive by leveraging networks, transactions, and data.

So, how can you identify platform opportunities? Moazed and Johnson provide some criteria:

  1. Look for technologies that reduce transaction costs and eliminate intermediaries, making exchanges more efficient.
  2. Seek opportunities where transactions can be automated and run algorithmically, saving time and resources.
  3. Find hidden or unrealized networks that can be tapped into, allowing you to leverage existing user bases or social connections.
  4. Identify fragmented and large supply sources, like Alibaba did by consolidating small enterprises in Asia to create a commercial opportunity for Asian exports.

Once you’ve identified a platform opportunity, the authors outline the steps to build a successful platform business:

  1. Develop your core transaction, which is the process that facilitates the exchange of value among users. This repeatable core transaction is the heart of your platform.
  2. Build an audience by attracting a mass of consumers and producers to your platform. The value of your network relies on having a critical mass of participants.
  3. Implement matchmaking capabilities to ensure that consumers are connected with the most suitable producers on your platform.
  4. Develop core tools and services that lower transaction costs and enhance the value of your platform over time, leveraging data to drive improvements.
  5. Establish rules and standards to cultivate good behavior on the platform and protect the interests of both users and the platform itself.

While platforms offer tremendous opportunities, they also come with challenges. Early-stage platforms face the hurdle of attracting enough users to create sufficient value and gain traction. The winners in the platform economy tend to take it all.

In “Modern Monopolies,” Moazed and Johnson provide valuable insights into the dynamics and strategies behind modern platforms. By understanding the power of platforms and how to leverage network effects, entrepreneurs and businesses can navigate the evolving economy and potentially build their own successful platforms.

The Future

The platform business model is poised to become even more prominent in the future due to its inherent ability to scale, adapt, and create network effects. As technology advances and connectivity increases, platforms have the potential to revolutionize industries across the board, from transportation and hospitality to healthcare and finance. By leveraging the power of networks, data, and automation, platforms can efficiently connect producers and consumers, disrupt traditional value chains, and unlock new sources of value. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the platform model offers unparalleled opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and creating value in the evolving digital economy.
