There is an ongoing massive protest in Port-Harcourt in favour of the former First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria following allegations of embezzlement. The citizens of  Rivers State and other Voluntary Youths Bodies has taken to the streets protesting against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to leave the former first lady Dame Patience Jonathan alone.

One of the placards read “Who is behind the victimization of our daughter, her hands are clean. Niger Delta sons, daughters arise against injustice.”

The decision of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which led  Patience Jonathan’s personal account inactive has caused instability in Port-Harcourt. The said account is domiciled in Skye Bank Plc with a balance of $5million that was frozen by the EFCC. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission  believes the money was proceeds of crime, hence the need to freeze her personal account.

The youths  lamented why Dame Patience Jonathan should be the first former First Lady of Nigeria that would be subjected to investigation by the EFCC. And so they claim that the investigation is politically motivated.

One of the protesters, a certain Wilcox said, “Patience Jonathan has contributed to the development of this country. Whether you like it or not she has contributed to the peace in this country.

“Her husband also contributed to peace in this country and we will not want anything to thwart this peace.

“We are not against her investigation but what we want is that due process must be followed. We have had other first ladies in this country why should our mother, Patience Jonathan be the first. Why are they always against the Niger-Delta. The world should come and hear our cry.”

In his response to the protesters demand the South-South Zonal Director of the EFCC‎ explained that the anti-corruption campaign doesn’t take sides and that they are not selective in the process of applying justice.

“Let me say this, the EFCC is a creation of the Law and the highest investigating body in the land.

“We do not shy away from our responsibility no matter whose ox is gored. If there is a case, we will follow it to a logical conclusion and where there is none there is none.

The federal government of Nigeria should not ignore the voice of the people. More attention should be given to this controversy and justice should take its course.
