The African Cup of Nations is fast approaching and the head coach of the Indomitable Lions Hugo Broos hopes to grab this opportunity to bring the trophy home. In this light, seven key players have deliberately rejected the call of duty to join the squad in order to defend the national colours in the upcoming AFCON games in Gabon, which will run from January 14th to the 5th of February 2017.
These young athletes turned down the call from the head coach Hugo Boss because of personal reasons and below is a list containing their names and respective clubs.
Allan Nyom (West Bromwich), André Zambo Anguissa (Olympique Marseille), Ibrahim Amadou (Lille OSC) preferred to stay behind so as to keep their positions as first choice players in their club.
Maxime Poundje (Bordeaux) chose to play for the French team.
André Onana (Ajax of Amsterdam) chose to remain to keep his position as first choice goalkeeper for the club. This is because Ajax has a good squad and Netherland’s first choice goalkeeper is part of the club.
Guy Roland Ndy Assembe (Nancy). His contract with the club is soon coming to an end and he prefers to stay with the club so as to preserve his place as first choice and to negotiate a new contract with the club.
As for Joël Matip (Liverpool), he does not want to play with the national team for the moment because of the bad experience he had with the technical bench.
FECAFOOT has decided to take actions against them according to FIFA’s laws.
All hope is not lost. The success of any squad does not necessarily tie to certain players or key players. There are younger and talented footballers playing here in Cameroon. Hugo Broos should make use of the resources at hand.
