Eric Aniva, the ‘hyena’ has been arrested.
The ‘hyena’, as he is known in his community, is HIV positive claims that he receives payment to have ‘ritual cleansing’ sex with young girls has been apprehended as ordered by the Malawian President.
As reported last week, Eric Aniva is one of the sex workers in some remote parts of Malawi that are hired to have sex with young girls. The meeting between him and his victims is considered as a process of cleansing and initiation.
Learning of such outrageous traditional practice, President Peter Mutharika of Malawi ordered his arrest and also instructed elements of the police to investigate and charge him on any crimes he had allusions to.
Some of the girls made to have sex with Eric after their first menstruation for a period of are as young as 12 years old.
“While we must promote positive cultural values and positive socialisation of our children, the president says harmful cultural and traditional practices cannot be accepted in this country,” presidential spokesman Mgeme Kalilani said in a statement
Mr Aniva would “further be investigated for exposing the young girls to contracting HIV and further be charged accordingly”, he said.
Mr. Mgeme further said that the president had also ordered all men and parents involved to be investigated.
“All people involved in this malpractice should be held accountable for subjecting their children and women to this despicable evil,” the statement said.
“These horrific practices although done by a few also tarnish the image of the whole nation of Malawi internationally and bring shame to us all.”
Africans are good at upholding their cultural values, but with practices like that of Erica Aniva there is no hope for progress as all young girls and widows in a community can become infected by one man and as a result lead to a low productive community.
